How many times have you gone on a “diet” and had the feeling of deprivation? This feeling of deprivation only leads you to eat what it was you so desperately wanted?

The definition of deprivation is “the lack of or denial of something considered to be necessary”. When you are desiring that piece of cake and you tell yourself you can’t have it, that has you feeling deprived. Is it really necessary or is it just you thinking and feeling you need it and you want it?

Most of us tell ourselves we don’t want to feel deprived. But do you truly know what it means to feel deprived? Probably not or you wouldn’t still be struggling to lose weight. You are still thinking about you wanting and needing that cake, cookies or donuts. When you have that going on what else is there to do when you feel you can’t do anything about it… you give in.

If you are like me at the beginning of my losing the 100 lbs., setting up a food protocol had me feeling so deprived. Thinking about the foods I thought I couldn’t have or thinking what am I going to do when I go out with my friends. My brain would go into thinking that wasn’t fair, why do they get to eat the pizza, burgers, and cake and not me. Our brain so loves to tell us story’s that it is not fair. Why can’t I have it just this once, and so much more which has us feeling frustrated, angry and maybe even sad. That food will not help us to lose weight so why are we feeling so deprived? It has us having a pity party, us feeling mad that we can’t have it at that time.

Deprivation is simply an emotion you feel when things get uncomfortable. And what happens when you get uncomfortable when you don’t get what you want, you feel deprived. Deprivation strikes when you think you can’t have all those yummy treats and snacks but you want them. You are uncomfortable with the thought and feeling that you are missing out on them. You go into the poor you thought. You tell yourself, you “should be able to have it”, “why do they get to have it and I don’t” thoughts. And doing this has you, of course, giving in because you tell yourself I deserve it. I will restart my diet tomorrow. And guess what, you are okay with it. You choose to have what you want and go off your plan because you don’t like being uncomfortable.  What you don’t see at that moment is that you still will have an uncomfortable feeling but now it is from you going off plan. You will feel more uncomfortable because you will then go into the beating yourself up mode. Eating what you did only deprives yourself of the opportunity to lose the weight you want.

If you want to lose weight you will have to be willing to accept that you can’t have everything you want. See that you are feeling deprived not because of the food you think you cant have but that you are not getting what you want and you feel sorry for yourself. You must be willing to be uncomfortable and not reward yourself by having it.

This is all about deciding what do you want. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to keep overeating?  Do you want to keep giving in and having the cookies, cake or snacks or eating off plan when you are out with your friends? All of this will not lead you in the direction of losing weight. Sticking to your food protocol, no matter what is the key to getting through that deprived feeling. Knowing you will still have that mind chatter and be okay with it being there, not reacting to it or giving in. Have a backup plan in place so you can do just that. The hardest step to take here is you making a full commitment to doing it no matter what. You must keep letting it be there until that deprived feeling is no longer there anymore.

Do you tell yourself “I can’t lose weight?”, “I will never keep it off for good”, “I can’t stick to a diet”, “I don’t like exercise”, “I don’t like salads”? I used to tell myself all of these things and thought there were just FACTS.

If you are like me and have some of these beliefs, you would totally argue with me they are true and are facts.

If you believe that you can’t stick to a diet, trust me that every time a treat is brought into your office, you will eat it. If you believe that you don’t like exercise, you will use every excuse in the book to not to do anything or if you do exercise, you do it with dread.

Did you know that beliefs like these that we have, that we think are facts are not. They are out thoughts. A FACT is something that is un-disputable. Can you dispute that the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening? – No. Your age is indisputable, you are what age you are, that is a fact.

So be careful in what you choose to believe. You can believe that you absolutely can lose weight and if that is what you choose, you will be so determined to figure out how to do it and you will!

How I figured out what beliefs were holding me back was to write down every single weight loss belief that came up; good and bad ones.

Discovering these beliefs are is important because your beliefs, your thoughts are up to you. What you think and believe can be changed to get the results you are wanting.

And guess what, you get to belief things that will have you feeling empowered, confident, happy and motivated. These feelings will be the ones that will help you to lose the weight.

This change in my beliefs is what I used to start my 100 lb. weight loss journey and it helps me to keep it off to this day.
